Description: Andrew Strahan, June 5, 1815. Bilfolium, 310 x 190 mm. Initially, Napoleon's brother, Joseph Bonaparte, ruled Naples after Napoleon's conquest. Then in 1808, Joseph was made King of Spain, and Napoleon installed his brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, as King of Naples. After the Battle of Leipzig Murat tried to distance himself from Napoleon and even signed a treaty with Austria. However, his position was ultimately untenable, especially against the opposition of the British After again siding with Napoleon following his escape from Elba, he was defeated by the Austrians at the Battle of Tolentino and was forcded to flee disguised as a sailor. He attempted a return from exile in October 1815 with 28 men but was met with hostility and executed by firing squad at the city walls.
