Title: Distress in Germany. At a Committee held on the 16th May, 1814 - W.F. Reynolds, Esq. in the Chair, Mr. Ackermann presented the following Address from the Ladies Philanthropic Association.
Description: Printed by William Phillips, 1814. Folio, bifolium, 405 x 250 mm. worn and creased, with repairs to gutter with no loss of text. No other copies traced. An account of the committee meeting of this short lived association formed to assist those affected by "the long-continued tyranny of Buonaparte." Of course, the women could not address the meeting themselves but their address was read by the printer and publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, a German émigré. The various reports include those from the Ladies of Clapham [who donated £219 13 8¾], a Ladies' Boarding School [donating £4 11 0], etc. The final page is a long list of subscriptions to the committee by ladies.
