Title: [Circular] To the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Lancaster. My Lord, The very numerous Proposals received every Day of Armed Association for local Security and Defence, render it necessary that I should state to your Lordship generally, the Views and Sentiments of Government on this Subject.
Description: 15th May, 1798. Bifolium, 340 x 210 mm. printed all sides. Henry Dundas [1742 - 1811] was Britain's first Secretary of State for War [1794 - 1801] and was Prime Minister William Pitt's trusted lieutenant. The circular, addressed to the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Lancaster though presumably meant for wider distribution, was concerned with the formation of volunteer corps and other preparations against invasion, particularly in Lancashire. Similar circulars appear to have been addressed to other County Lord Lieutenants> Manchester Public Library is the only traced location for this one, those for Huntingdon [27 locations], Perthshire [NLS only] and Suffolk [BL only].
