Presentation copy inscribed by Mark Gertler to his future mother in law Mrs Hodgkinson, June 1930. Gertler married Marjorie Greatorex Hodgkinson in 1930. It was not a happy marriage with frequent bouts of ill health of both, though it did lead to the birth of their son, Luke Gertler. Suffering from financial problems, depression after a derided exhibition, the death of his mother and the desertion of his wife, Gertler gassed himself in his studio in 1939.
