Description: The Observer, Sunday December 7, 1823. Broadsheet newspaper, 4 pages. A detailed account of the first part of the trial including a woodcut illustration of the court, which also prints the lengthy indictment in its entirety. Thurtell was convicted and sentenced to death and hanged on 9th January 1824, shortly after the end of the trial. They didn't hang about in those days. Hunt, who had assisted in the conviction, was also sentenced to death but his sentence was commuted to transportation to Australia where he rehabilitated himself, eventually serving as a police constable. Probert, though never punished for the crime, became a social outcast due to the immense publicity. he resorted to crime to support himself and in 1825 was hanged for stealing a horse worth £25.
