Giovanni Battista Belzoni [1778 - 1823] was an explorer, pioneering Egyptologist and showman. At one point early in his life he was a circus strongman [he was 6ft 7] but took up exploring and landing in Egypt undertook the removal and transportation back to England of the statue of Ramasses II [The Younger Memnon] and in 1817 opened the tomb of Seti I, here described.
