Author: GEORGE CRUIKSHANK Title: The Worship of Bacchus. Certificate.
Description: 1869. Engraved certificate, 140 x 210 mm. Certificate presented to Miss Smithies who "Was one of those who assisted in the efforts made to convey the picture of "The Worship of Bacchus" to the Kensington Museum." A massive 7ft 10 x 13 ft 8 inches oil painting by George Cruikshank on the subject of the evils of drink was purchased by subscription and presented to the National Gallery, before being immediately transferred to the Kensington Museum, as shown here. It fell out of fashion and was returned to the National Gallery, then the Tate where it was put into storage. It was restored and put back on display in 2001. Whilst a number of these certificates, designed by Cruikshank himself, must have been printed, I have been unable to trace another example
