Description: Blackpool, 1896. Handkerchief 490 x 500 mm. medal 35 mm. diameter. The giant wheel at Blackpool was opened on 22nd August 1896. It was 220 ft high and weighed 440 tons, with a full capacity of 750 people. Built to rival Blackpool Tower and one of 4 designed by Walter B. Bassett [the others Earls Court, Vienna and Paris] lasted until 1928 when it was dismantled, the carriages being put on sale at £20 each.
