Author: VAL. [VALENTINE] KNIGHT Title: Proposals of a New Model for Rebuilding the City of London, with Houses, Streets and Wharfs, to be forthwith set out by His Majesty's and the City Surveyors: With the Advantages that will accrue by the Building the same accordingly.
Description: 1666, but probably later. Broadside map, folded sheet, 590 x 410 mm. with map to upper part and letterpress descriptive text to lower. On rather brittle thick paper which is chipped and torn but with no loss of printed image. The map appears to have several issues, not all of which carry the letterpress below. One of a number of proposed schemes for rebuilding following the Great Fire of London in 1666 and possibly the only scheme to be commercially published. Knight's plan called for the construction of a toll canal which would fund the further reconstruction of London. Charles II was incensed that Knight suggested the King "draw a benefit to himself from so public a calamity of his people" – and had Knight briefly thrown in jail.
