Title: Architectural Remains in Yorkshire, with a Short Historical Account of Each.
Description: 1850. 4to. 300 x 230 mm. Original cloth, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, rear cover detached and gutta percha completely perished, so loose within the boards. 15 fine sepia watercolours, and manuscript text surrounded by ink and watercolour decorative borders. Although the images are unsigned, there is presentation inscription on the front end paper to "Mrs. Bischoff, Highbury from E--- Oct 28th 1850." with a later inscription "From Sister B. to ES Jan 7th 18??" A later note reads "Herewith Madge. Left her by her Aunt Ellen...." James Bischoff lived at Highfield Terrace, Leeds until his death in 1845> the recipient is likely his widow, Peggy [née Stansfeld]. The attractive sepia drawings cover Castles: Bolton, Richmond, Knaresborough, Midelham and Scarborough> Monasteries: Fountains, Coverham, Kirkstall, Easby, Whitby, Bolton: Houses: Ancient House at Kirby Moorside, Fountains Hall, Old Farm House at Lazencroft, Cottage at Woodhouse Carr. Also includes a short piece "An Account of the Architecture and Manners, and Customs, in the Reign of Elizabeth and James."
