Author: MOULE, Sophia Barbara Title: Sketches. [spine title]
Description: 1833 - 50. Large folio. 420 x 320 mm. Half morocco. With around 200 fine watercolours and a couple of pen and ink sketches, with decorated watercolour title piece pasted to the front pastedown. Sophia Barbara Moule [dates unknown] was the only child, daughter and pupil of Thomas Moule [1784 - 1851] a noted map maker and antiquarian who she assisted in his literary pursuits writing on heraldry and antiquities, producing the illustrations for his Heraldry of Fish [1842]> she married John Pain [1803 - 68] in 1857 [he was 54 at the time], surviving his death. The images, dated from 1833 to 1850, cover the final years of her father's life, she may have stopped painting following his death. They are finely executed in a lovely pale, typically Georgian/Victorian manner and palette and are predominantly English topographical views in Kent, Sussex, Woburn, York, Dorset, Poole, Richmond, Clevedon, etc.> the vast majority identified and dated. It doesn't seem too fanciful to suggest that Sophia accompanied her father on his travels around the country for his antiquarian researches and that these were created for her own amusement> the only portrait in the collection may be of Thomas Moule himself.
