Description: 1824 - 29. 8vo. 240 x 150 mm. full straight grained green calf, all edges gilt. With presentation inscription "Britannia Beddome from her affectionate brother John Charlesworth." A collection of contributions by friends and family including watercolours, drawings and poetry. A pencil note to the first blank reads "It is particularly requested no compliments may be paid to the Owner of this Book." All the contributions are attractive and well finished, with 20 watercolours, 18 pencil drawings and 35 individual poems> the contributor to each one having initialled, and in some cases signed in full and dated. It has not been possible to identify the contributors but many have B as the last initial so presumably a family member: M. Brown [possibly her brother Richard's wife], M.B., A.W, J.W, Jemima, Eliza Guillebaud, Marion Guillebaud [at Bromley], A.V. Guillebaud, Sarah Wilson [at Streatham], S.G., S. Gutteridge, J.G. Jun., M. Beddome, E.J.W., W.S. Hall, J.H., S.S.G. [Twickenham], A.S., A. Black, M. Richardson [Clapham], B. Barton, H. Billings, M.A.B. [probably Mary Ann Beddome, Britannia's sister], C. Neale, Alfred Wilson, E.A. Fysh, A. Gosse [Lymington House], M. Bigars, Thomas Conder, J.B., Frances Jeffries, M.S., W.E, S. Jameson, etc. Britannia Beddome [born 1795], later Mrs Master. Her sister, Elizabeth, married Reverend John Charlesworth, an active anti-slavery campaigner, in 1809. A loose note identifies other family members
