Title: Album of Watercolours and Drawings.
Description: 1834 - 40. 4to. 275 x 230 mm. Sheep backed blind stamped calf. 15 watercolours, 17 pencil drawings plus a "transformation" watercolour. Initial C.H. to end paper. An interesting and most attractive collection of original drawings and watercolours, all apparently executed in the same hand on a variety of subjects. The 15 watercolours are generally natural history studies: fruit, flowers, butterflies. The pencil drawings more varied: topographical, nature studies, portraits, etc. including a couple of studies of Napoleon and one of Isaac van Amburgh and his animals. Van Amburgh was a popular showman who travelled with his circus, considered to be the first animal trainer of modern times and who would enter the cages of wild beasts without harm. Plus an attractive transformation watercolour, "the circulating library", a figure made up of books, and a 'lift the flap' of an artist's easel and sketch book, perhaps representing the artist's work.
