Description: Liverpool: Lace & Addison, Standard Office c. 1844. Large broadside, 565 x 885 mm. with woodcuts. Some old creasing and a couple of old closed tears but a remarkable survival of a souvenir broadside, probably issued as a newspaper supplement for the Liverpool Standard and General Commercial Advertiser. The History of the "Great Britain" is well known. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she was launched in 1843 and completed in 1845> the first large ocean going steam ship to combine an iron hull with a screw propeller and was the largest passenger ship in the world at the time. Following a checkered history, ending up as coal hulk in the Falkland Islands before being scuttled in 1937. She was raised and returned to Bristol, where she was launched. Following conservation and restoration work she now serves as a museum.
