Author: THE MUTUAL COMMUNICATION SOCIETY Title: Society of Mutual Communication for the Protection of Trade.
Description: Engraved by John Strongintharm, Pall Mall, c. 1806. Membership card? 75 x 115 mm. closed tear and a little soiled. A curious card, possibly a membership cared for the secretive Mutual Communication Society, founded in the early 19th century, initially by a group of tailors, later expanded to other trades, who would share details of their customers. The rapidly expanding metropolis of London meant that traders no longer intimately knew all their customers, so comparing references became increasingly important. Particularly intriguing here is the central figure of a woman, possibly intended to be Britannia, whose spear rests upon an armadillo.
