Description: Jonathan Cape, 1931. 1st impression of the 1st illustrated edition. End papers browned, cloth spine very slightly faded otherwise a Very Good copy in slightly worn dust wrapper, unclipped but with some old tape repairs to the verso. The 1st Edition of 2,000 copies was unillustrated, but such was its success that Cape issued an illustrated edition of a further 2,000 copies the following year which went into a number of reprints before the illustrations were redone by Ransome himself. It was 1938 [the 14th printing] before the more familiar edition with Ransome's own illustrations appeared. Hammond A25c. [Hammond had not examined an unclipped copy of the dust wrapper.]
