[Translation] "Declaration by the representatives of Alsace-Lorraine read out at the National Assembly in Bordeaux on 1 March 1871, by M. Jules Grosjean, Member for and Mayor of Belfort. 'Delivered, in contempt of all justice and by a hateful misuse of force, to the dominion of foreigners, we have a final duty to perform. We yet again declare null and void a treaty that disposes of us without our consent. Reclaiming our rights remains forever open to each and every one of us in the form and to the extent that our conscience dictates. At the time of leaving this chamber where our dignity no longer allows us to sit, and despite the bitterness of our grief, the supreme thought we find in our innermost hearts is one of gratitude towards those who for six months unceasingly defended us, and of unfailing attachment to the Motherland from which we have been violently snatched. We will follow you with our wishes and will wait, with confidence in the future, for a regenerated France to resume the course of its great destiny. Your brothers in Alsace and Lorraine, separated at this time from the communal family, will preserve a filial affection for France, missing from their homes, until the day when it comes and takes back its place there.'
