Title: [A Series of Maps: Map of the World> plus a fictional map, Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Scotland, England and Ireland.] to accompany William Butler's Geographical and Biographical Exercises, designed for the use of young ladies.
Description: Grant & Griffith, [1848] Oblong 4to. I folding double hemisphere map of the work, old closed tear, repaired> 10 other maps, the Europe one with ink identification in a contemporary hand. No outer wrappers. Nathanial Rogers Hewitt [1783 - 1841] was a British engraver who produced maps for a cartographers including James Wyld and Samuel Fores. This appears to be a series of maps published for children, since the publisher is Grant and Griffith, successors to J. Harris, although we have been unable to positively identify the publication, and no other copies have been traced. The maps are sequentially lettered A - I [plus the double hemisphere world map], and each one has numbers and letters> presumably a key was also issued. William Butler's teaching book was first published by Harris, a 10th edition appearing in 1818. Subsequently an edition, was issued by Harris's successor Grant and Griffith in 1848. An early atlas specifically for female education. When originally issued, teaching for girls would have been relatively unusual in the sciences, although more common by the time this later edition was published.
