Description: Original sepia ink watercolour wash, 1862. Original sepia ink and watercolour wash drawing, 235 x 350 mm. Showing this important naval engagement, this would appear to be a contemporary original watercolour, indistinctly signed bottom left, the title in pencil across the lower edge. The battle between the Merrimack [renamed by the Confederacy The Virginia] and the Monitor proved indecisive but greatly improved the morale of both sides and marked a new era in naval warfare.
