Description: Glasgow, 1854. Ticket, 75 x 115 mm. The Glasgow temperance movement was a powerful force in the city during the nineteenth much of the twentieth century and coffee houses gave an alternative to pubs which allowed social intercourse and an opportunity for meetings and establishing friendships. Polls which enabled areas to remain dry according the the Temperance (Scotland) Act, only ceased in 1976> several areas chose to become 'dry' in the 1920s.
