Title: Nude Woman, Standing.
Description: c. 1939. Watercolour on paper, 480 x 310 mm. unsigned. Pencil note to verso "Demonstration watercolour by Mervyn Peake, Westminster School of Art 1939." Peake taught at Westminster in the 1930s, where he met his wife Maeve Gilmore, and it was his common practice to demonstrate techniques to his students., Most of these pieces are rough sketches, or incomplete drawings, but every now and then, as here, there would be a finished piece, though he very rarely signed them. This is reminiscent of a couple of watercolours which I sold over 10 years ago which I had tentatively dated to 1935, the date here was presumably written by the student. Provenance: From the collection of the artist Gwendoline R. Jackson [1919 - ?].
