Description: Plymouth: Groom & Co., photographers, c. 1870. Albumen print, 165 x 245 on printed card mount, 265 x 360 mm. A fine unfaded example. The Bellerophon was completed in 1866 and served in the Channel Fleet until 1871, this image probably from that date. She served in the Mediterranean 1871 - 2, after which she was fitted with a poop deck [not present here] before transferring to the North America Station. After various further commission including a period as a port guard ship and a stokers' training ship, she was scrapped in 1923.
