Title: Recüeil Nouveau. De Differens Cartouche inventez par le Sr. de la Joüe Peintre ordinaire du roi en son Acadédemie Royal de Peintre & Sculpture.
Description: Paris: chez Huquier, [1734] Large oblong 4to. pp. engraved title and 11 further engraved plates. Stitched as issued, first sheet loose, with a very faint old water stain? Jacques De La Joüe [1686 - 1761] architectural painter was acepted by the Académie Royale in 1721 and Mme de Pompadour was one of his patrons> he executed works for a number of royal palaces and buildings. He was one of a group of masters who, during the last years of Louis XIV's reign, reacted against the conventional austerity and heaviness of form that characterised the art of the 17th century. Gillot, Watteau, Aurèle Meissonnier and Gilles-Marie Oppenoord were friends of his. Alongside them he provided work for Gabriel Huquier to engrave as here. Huquier rendered 39 drawings by Lajoue - of ornaments, trophies, griffins and architectural monuments. It was through his influence that the taste for rocaille developed. He issued three suites of these fine ornamental cartouches between 1734 and 1736 of which this is the first. All these collections are rare in commerce> they were reprinted c. 1900.
