John Knox [1720 - 90] was a London bookseller who managed to retire with a large fortune in his 40s. He spent much of the rest of his life travelling through his native Scotland and became particularly interested in the poverty which he found there, producing works in which he suggested improvements, including the construction of a number of fishing villages in the Highlands and Hebrides using private funds.
