Author: CHINESE MAGIC POWDER Title: Just Imported, the Chinese Magic Powder, a Wonderful Discovery.
Description: Lavenne's [G. Stuart, printer, Haymarket], c. 1850. Handbill, 170 x 125 mm. "The Magic Powder has a great advantage over Liquid Writing Ink, with which it is impossible to obtain immediately a pure black." Up to the early 19th Century most ink in the Western World was iron gall ink which usually faded to a rusty brown. I assume that this 'Chinese Magic Powder' was Chinese [also known as Indian] ink in powder form which gives a dark colour less prone to fading or discolouration.
