Title: Fair. The Nobility, Gentry and Inhabitants of the County of Derby and places adjacent, are respectfully informed that the first Spring Fair of Horned Cattle, &c. &c. will be held on Weston Green, on Tuesday Morning the 8th Day of March, 1814.
Description: Derby: Marriott, printer, 1814. 320 x 195 mm. rather stained and a little chipped. I am not entirely convinced that this is for a genuine event, rather than a satirical poster with local references which are now lost to us... Among the amusements are: pudding eating by boys for a new hat, a race by women of all ages for a Holland smock, the Pauper's Plate, will be run by asses of all ages and sizes except whereasses, the balloon to ascend is made of the same construction and will be a striking representation of that in which Mr Sadler ascended at Nottingham, not at Derby. N.B. The Derby Philosophers are requested to stay away, as the Stewards will prosecute any that dare to attend according to Club Law. Also, eating of fire, drawing a badger, dog worrying, etc. The Stewards have engaged the noted Poddy, a sheepshearer with a Drawn Knife and Club Stick, to keep the ground and prevent Blackguards from disturbing the peace during Amusements. Farmers Servants are requested to put on their best Bibs and Tuckers, and Chimney Sweeps are desired to stay away.
