Author: THEATRE ROYAL, DRURY LANE Title: By Command of Her Majesty... Her Majesty's Servants will produce the Grand Original Opera The Siege of Rochelle... composed by M.W. Balfe. To conclude with the Comedy of Simpson & Co.
Description: T. Wright, printer, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, 1837. Printed on silk, 375 x 250 mm. The Siege of Rochelle was Michael William Balfe's first opera in English. Balfe himself sang the role of Michel, who is a dominant figure in the drama, even though ostensibly only part of the sub-plot. First performed at Drury Lane in 1835, this would appear to be a Royal Command Performance with this silk commemorative poster produced especially for this night.
