Author: QUEEN'S COLLEGE, BATH Title: [Prospectus for a] National Undertaking. Queen's College, Bath, Auxiliary to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Description: Bath: George Wood, printer, c. 1845. Bifolium, 420 x 255 mm. elevation to first page, prospectus to pages 3 and 4, rather browned and creased. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Envisaged as a rival to the great colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, the architect of the proposed college was George Phillips Manners [1789 - 1866], who at the time was Bath City Architect. George Hawkins [1809 - 52], a specialist in architectural views, produced the lithographic view. I have been unable to trace another copy and the scheme didn't go ahead, presumably because it failed to raise the necessary funds.
