Following the dissolution in the time of Henry VIII, the tithe formally paid to Rome by the clergy was paid to the Court of First Fruit and Tenths, whereby they had to pay a portion of their first year's income followed by a tenth part of their income annually thereafter. In 1704 the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty, were granted all receipts to benefit the poor clergy who were exempt from the charge.
