Hubert von Herkomer [1849 - 1914] was a painter, pioneering film maker and composer best known as a portrait artist. He painted Queen Victoria on her deathbed as an alternative to the wax death mask which Edward VII decried. He was Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University and he founded the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey in 1883 which he directed without payment until his retirement in 1904.
