Description: Henry Colburn, 1829. First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., 2 hand coloured aquatint frontispieces, 14 aquatint plates (3 folding), 4 engraved maps and plans (2 folding), 11 wood-engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, extremities rubbed. The folding maps have small closed tears where carelessly opened, the panoramas with tears along the bottom of the folds. Some very occasional light spotting and a small light stain affecting the top corner of the plates of volume 2 [free of the printed area]. However generally a Very Good clean copy. British Admiral Charles Colville Frankland (1792-1876) travelled from Vienna across south east Europe in 1827 when he was still a lieutenant in the Navy. The journey was extensive and lasted fifteen months. Frankland produced this account shortly after his return. The work is illustrated with engravings based on the author's own drawings and includes a glossary of the Arabic language. Abbey Travel 26> Blackmer 628> Atabey 460.
