The Lancasteriana educational system of mutual teaching, founded by Joseph Lancaster, became a popular educational method in Mexico in the first half of the 19th century; but Benito Juarez instituted liberal reform with more rigorous and uniform methods, which along with increasing state control, led to the decline of the Lancasterian system.
