Mainly known for his long humorous, epistolary poem, The New Bath Guide, Christopher Anstey (1724-1805) also translated Thomas Gray's Elegy into Latin. A Familiar Epistle is a translation of Anstey's own Latin epistle to its would-be illustrator Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, (Latin original, entitled Epistola poetica familiaris, was originally published at Bath in 1776) picking up the themes of his earlier An Election Ball. Rare in the trade in any condition. ESTC T74912. New paper spine, first half damp stained, some edges lightly creased with minor wear, nice impressions, still a good or better copy .
