Author: [Miñano y Bedoya, Sebastian] Title: Las Cartas Del Madrileño, Sacadas Del Censor, Periodico Español

Quarter morocco over marbled boards, five raised bands, gilt title, rules and decoration on spine, marbled endpapers. xx, 256 pp. 16mo. Originally written by Miñano y Bedoya as a series of satirical letters criticizing Spanish manners and customs, published in "The Censor," probably the most intellectual magazine at this period in Spain, it justified his criticism of customs arguing that "era de creer que cansase la lectura larga de materias puramente doctrinales entre gentes poco acostumbradas a las abstracciones metafísicas en que se fundan, si no las sazonaba de la sal de una crítica urbana y e caz contra los enormes abusos del día más chocantes," (p. v.). Sebastián de Miñano y Bedoya (1779-1845) was a Spanish writer, tutor to the infant Luis de Bourbon, and an officer of the Secretariat. When French troops invaded Spain, he accompanied General Castaños in his entry into Madrid, but with the fall of the monarchy, he had to emigrate to France, until, along with other Francophiles, he could return to Madrid in 1816 . During the constitutional period he collaborated on "The Censor". His vision on the political issues of his time is reflected in this work as well as the 1820 "Lamentos politicos de un pobrecito holgazan" (Moans of an idle poor), which, along with History of Spain from 1820 to 1823 Revolution by an Eyewitness (1824), written in French, and Geographical and Statistical Dictionary of Spain and Portugal (1826-1829), are the highlights of his work. OCLC, COPAC, and other European Library catalogues locate only six copies: Univ. Conn. Smith, Duke, Princeton, Univ. Leeds, and BN Espana. Palau y Dulcet (2nd ed.) 171267. A very good copy with scuffed spine ends, some edgewear to boards, bright interior.
