Description: [New York], Charles Scribner's Sons, 1907. First edition. Later plain wrappers. [314-326], [449-464] pp. 8vo. The first article presents a good picture of French universities prior to the First World War. Barrett Wendell was a graduate, as well as English professor at Harvard, with his career spanning from 1880 though 1917. He spent time in France between 1904 & 1905, and delivered the eight-part lecture series, "Impressions of Contemporary France" at Harvard in spring of 1906. The lecture series was subsequently published in Scribner's Magazine in spring of 1907, with parts I & II published in the March and April issues. Removed from original volumes else a very good copy with chipped, detached wrappers.
