August von Kotzebue(1761-1819), German dramatist and politician published this play, Das Schreibepult, in Berlin in 1798, a year before the British translation. An adaptation entitled The Wise Man of the East was published in 1799 by Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson Inchbald and an American edition published by Smith appeared in 1801. Scarce.
