'Darwin sent his text page by page to to the translator Dr. Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen, himself a scientist of international reputation. The translator's annotations were highly regarded in scientific circles' (Acta Historiae Neerlandicae: Studies on the History of the Netherlands, VII). Heijs van Zouteveen returned the commentaries to Darwin and, according to a letter from Darwin, Darwin appreciated these additions and used them in the next edition. (Glick. The comparitive reception of Darwinism). Heijs van Zouteveen wrote in the preface of the translation of the Descent that Darwin had collected so much evidence to prove his hypothesis that by now it was almost a certainty.
