Author: MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT Title: Traffic in Towns: A study of the long term problems of traffic in urban areas ['The Buchanan Report']
Description: London, HMSO, 1963. xiv, 224pp, hundreds of maps, photos, diagrams etc (incl colour) 31x22, cloth, illustrated dw. A bit dusty, a few spots and marks throughout, cloth edge worn, dw a bit chipped and creased with owner's name on cover, good copy thus. The famous Buchanan Report. British cities should be redesigned to accommodate the motor car. The report naturally had important conservation implications. Buchanan's ideas are still valuable and we find an interest in this volume worldwide. However, the author's segregation ideas now seem to be counter to current thinking on shared space and traffic calming ideas. Also a striking example of 1960s book production.
