Author: SHELTER NEIGHBOURHOOD ACTION PROJECT Title: SNAP 69/72: Another Chance for Cities
Description: Liverpool, Shelter Neighbourhood Action Project (SNAP) 1973 225pp, photos and illustrations throughout 30x21, wraps Wraps a bit rubbed, small taped area on spine which is rather faded, binding a bit shaky, contents very good. The record of the innovative SNAP project in Granby in inner city Liverpool. The City Council had designated huge areas of the older city for slum clearance, sweeping away whole communties. By the late 1960s grassroots pressure against these programmes was growing, something recognised by the Skeffington Report. Shelter developed an approach based on refurbishment and repair, based on the needs and wants of the local community, something quite alien to the planners of the time. Nearly 50 years later the Turner Prize was awarded to a collaboration of architects and the Community Land Trust that grew out of SNAP's work in Granby. Still important and inspirational.
