The LIRA was set up by the Government of Northern Ireland in 1920 to carry out research and to promote the industry, which was very signficant to the local economy. It was wound up in 1993 as the industry disappeared, and its archive can know be found in the Lisburn Museum. This exhibition covered everything from breeding experiments for the flax plant through to the many uses of the finished cloth.
