Title: Examples of Ornamental Metal Work. Drawn and Engraved by...
Description: London, Wm. Pickering 1836 50 plates, 2 of which are hand-coloured 29x23, quarter bound in calf, paste on spine label, textured cloth boards Edges worn, boards and calf a bit rubbed, most pages affected by heavy foxing and browning (the coloured images are the exception) on the margins in particular, pasted in book plate on ffep. "A very important early collection not of fanciful patterns but of carefully chosen examples of executed work from the 14th to 16th centuries, and contemporary designs..." Weinreb, 20 (78) Includes road lamps, railings, gates, door fittings etc. Despite the foxing, which appears to be something that impacts most copies, a lovely and interesting item. The bookplate is that of Anthony Salvin (1799-1881) and his wife Anne Andrews Nesfield. Salvin was best known for his expertise in Tudor architecture, and work on restoration of historic buildings and castles, including work on Windsor Castle for Prince Albert.
