Title: Le Guide de l'Ornemaniste et de l'Ornement Pour La Décoration des Batiments tels que Frises, Araabesques, Panneaux, Rosaces, Candalabres, Vases etc...
Description: Liége, Dominque Avanzo 1847 12pp, 37 plates 39x28, half (re)bound in green calf, cloth. Rebinding is relatively modern and in good condition, contents very good, bookplate of Geo. Tho. Robinson on ffep, presumably moved during rebinding given Robinson's dates. Originally published in Paris in 1826, this edition seems to be more or less identical, and is an attractive collection of designs for vases, panels and so on. George Thomas Robinson (1827-1897) was an architect and art critic for the Manchester Guardian. Perhaps his most famous exploit was during the siege of Metz 1870, when he attempted to send reports to his editor along with letters from residents to their families by attaching them to balloons made out of pieces of paper and floating them over the besieging Prussian army. Over 150,000 letters were despatched from the city using Robinson's balloons, and at least some made it to their destinations before the French commander put to a stop to the practice as a security risk. Sadly the Guardian has no record that any of his reports reached Manchester.
