Grimshaw (the author's grandfather) was a self-taught artist who divided opinion among his contemporaries: some regarded his realistic, almost photographic, approach as being barely painting at all, while Whistler was a strong supporter, particularly of his moonlit townscapes. Having sunk into near obscurity after his death, Grimshaw's reputation was revived by a series of exhibitions in the second half of the 20th century and he is now highly regarded. His grandson notes ruefully that not long after Grimshaw's death his work would not sell, with one Leeds woman deciding her twenty paintings would be more use as firewood since they clearly had no value at all.
