Title: The Biography of John Atkinson Grimshaw 1836-1893
Description: Kirkstall, Lautrec Photo Litho 1972 6pp, various two colour sketches, 8 full colour reproductions of the artist's work, tissue guards 43x59, wraps. Ex lib, with stamps on cover and on first page of text, cover creased, tissue guards creased and torn, binding a bit loose, images good. Grimshaw (the author's grandfather) was a self-taught artist who divided opinion among his contemporaries: some regarded his realistic, almost photographic, approach as being barely painting at all, while Whistler was a strong supporter, particularly of his moonlit townscapes. Having sunk into near obscurity after his death, Grimshaw's reputation was revived by a series of exhibitions in the second half of the 20th century and he is now highly regarded. His grandson notes ruefully that not long after Grimshaw's death his work would not sell, with one Leeds woman deciding her twenty paintings would be more use as firewood since they clearly had no value at all. The prints are: 'Scarborough Skyline', 'Burning Off', 'Whitby', 'The Customs House Liverpool: Looking North', 'Scarborough Lights', 'Home Again', and 'Rouen From The Bridge of St Pierre'. Oversize item, may require additional postage to some destinations.
