Apparently the first Rawlplug was invented by John Joseph Rawlings to make the fixing of light fittings in the British Museum quicker and less obtrusive. Perhaps more innovative even that the plug was the company's marketing strategy, at one point taking out the whole front page of the Daily Mail to promote their invention, an unheard of level of promotional spending.
