Title: Study of the Inner Areas of Conurbations: Summary and Conclusions (Vol I); Detailed Studies (Vol II)
Description: London, DOE 1975 ii, 12 single sided maps, 26pp (vol I); vii, 12 single sides maps, 131pp (vol II) 30x21, stapled card covers, two uniform volumes. Very good, apart from a couple of margin marks. A research project that started from concerns that inner city areas were performing less well than the urban areas that surrounded them, and were losing population as the better off moved to the suburbs. The report brought together data from London, the West Midlands, South East Lancashire, Merseyside and Tyneside (and Greater Nottingham, for comparison purposes). The conclusion was that the evidence did not support the original premise: inner city areas were not as well off as the suburbs, but the gap wasn't worsening - the differences between different inner areas were greater than between inner areas and suburbs overall.
