Author: MOORE Peter (Chairman) Title: Report from the Select Committee on Sewers in the Metropolis (HC542)
Description: London, House of Commons 1823 51pp 34x21, black library cloth, glt lettering Very good. The Committee heard from a number of witness who described the complex and ancient sets of rules that governed London's sewers, but decided to only report the hearings rather than make any recommendations. It was to be some decades before the appalling state of the River Thames and concerns about health finally led to action. Moore had an interesting career, making his fortune with the East India Company, then spending much of it on his political career in the radical end of the Whig movement. Sbortly after losing his seat companies that he had promoted collapsed leaving many out of pocket, and he fled to Dieppe to escape arrest, before giving up what was left of his own wealth to try to compensate those that had lost money.
