Author: MARSHALL Francis Title: London West
Description: London, Studio 1944 95pp, 13 colour plates, many bw pencil illustrations 25x19, cream cloth, burgundy text Cloth a bit grubby, slight pulling to spine, contents clear and bright, very good for wartime item. Essentially two long essays, one about the bright young things of London's West End, with illustrations of parties, night clubs, visits to Henley and so on, and the second shorter element about the changes brought about the war, but more the ways in which life went on as before but in different circumstances - and perhaps in a more democratic way - one of the final illustrations is a lovely sketch of "tea in the hall, blitz style" with a cross section of society - a soldier, a char lady, and a wealthy young woman serving tea from her silver teapot - chatting together in a way probably unimaginable before 1939. Marshall had a long career as an illustrator, including a long stint for Vogue during the 1930s, and later as a book illustrator for Barbara Cartland among others.
