Author: DAWES JC Title: Report of an Investigation Into the Public Cleansing Service in the Administrative County of London
Description: London, HMSO 1929 vi, 123pp, 26 plates plus large fold out plate, 2 plans, numerous tables. 28x22, boards, cloth spine with glt text. Ex-lib, with one neat label on fep and faded mark on spine, blind stamps on some images, very good thus. Detailed survey of the situation relating to the collection and disposal of domestic waste in London in the late 1920s. Numerous problems are identified, not least the appalling state of the Corporation of London's huge waste dumps at South Hornchurch, which is illustrated on the very large fold out panorama photograph. As well as being massive, it was also uncontrollably on fire, producing a great pall of toxic smoke uncomfortably close to the LCC's showpiece new housing estate at Becontree. The immediate closure of the 'worst refuse dump in England' was very strongly recommended.
