Author: STEVENS Henry (preface) Title: An Account of the Proceedings at the Dinner Given by Mr. George Peabody to the Americans Connected with the Great Exhibition, at the London Coffee House, Ludgate Hill, on the 27th October 1851
Description: London, William Pickering (for Private Distribution) 1851 114pp 23x15, blue cloth, glt decoration Cloth grubby, some rubbing on the edges, foxing throughout, good thus. A private published summary of the celebration dinner hosted by Peabody for the many (roughly 150) guests related to the American section at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Peabody had already used a substantial amount of his own money to improve his countrymen's exhibit after Congress refused to fund it, and this dinner was marked to tributes to his generosity and to his efforts to support Anglo-American friendship. The decoration on the front cover is a laurel wreath, and doesn't include the eagle seen on some copies; perhaps the American guests were given copies with their national emblem on, and those without were reserved for other purposes.
