The sudden collapse of the tower block in a gas explosion dealt a mortal blow to system building, as serious weaknesses in both design and construction were uncovered. In particular the failure of architects and structural engineers to give consideration to the potential for progressive collapse, and the failure of the agency in charge of building regulations and standards to do the same, was highlighted as a key cause of the disaster.
